Using the Square Yards and Acres Converter

This converter allows you to find equivalent values between 2 commonly used units of area within the imperial system, the square yard ($yd^2$) and the acre (ac).

Start by choosing the spelling you want to use in the converter, between the American and the British spelling. 

The next step consists of choosing your input (the unit in which the value you are trying to convert comes) and the output (the unit in which you want the result of the conversion to be in) units. 

The input unit is chosen in the ‘CONVERT FROM’ menu. The choice is between square yards and acres.

The output unit is chosen in the ‘CONVERT TO’ section, with the same 2 options as with the input units.

An alternative way to choosing the units is to consider the default choice or to swap it by clicking on the icon with 2 arrows headed in opposite directions. 

Once you are satisfied with your choice of input and output units, move toward the ‘VALUE TO CONVERT’ section, where you type in the input value as a decimal number. Make sure you use the decimal dot and not a comma, as is the case in some countries. 

The final setting requires you to choose the number of decimal places you want your result rounded toward.

Once you are happy with all of your settings, click on ‘CONVERT’.

Your result will appear below the converter in a form of a decimal number rounded to your desired number of decimal places. Alongside the result, you will also see the conversion rate between your input and output units, as well as a convenient ‘COPY’ icon, which allows you to copy the result by simply clicking on it. 

Converting Square Yards and Acres Manually

The conversion rate between the 2 units is the key to manually converting between the units. 

We start by expressing a simple relationship between square yards and acres, which is that 1 acre consists of 4,840 square yards.

This means that the conversion rate of acres to square yards is 1:4,840.

To apply this rate to the 2 formulae we will create, we just need to carefully decide whether it is division or multiplication by 4,840 that we are after. 

The rule of thumb is, that if we are moving from a smaller to a larger unit (meaning comparing 1 of each unit against each other), then we are dividing, as our result must have a lower value (since if something is larger, we need fewer of it to fill the same area).

Hence we get the following formulae.

$YD^2$ = AC x 4,840

AC = $YD^2$ ÷ 4,840

The usage of these formulae is demonstrated in the 2 examples below.

EXAMPLE 1: Tony took a job as a harvester. He is supposed to organize the harvest of a field that has an area of 33.5 acres. Tony is used to making all of his planning based on square yards. What is the area of the field in square yards?

We choose the correct formula based on input and output. The goal is to use the formula where the subject (the standalone variable on the left side) is also the output. In our case, the output is in $yd^2$, hence we will be using the first formula. We substitute 33.5 for acres and arrive at the following calculations.

$YD^2$ = AC x 4,840 = 33.5 x 4,840 = 162,140 $yd^2$

EXAMPLE 2: A mansion has an area of 3,500 $yd^2$. What is the area of this mansion in acres, rounded to 2 decimal places?

Here we see our input is in $yd^2$ and the output is in acres. That makes the second formula the most suitable one for solving this problem. We simply substitute 3,500 for $yd^2$ and count as follows. 

AC = $YD^2$ ÷ 4,840 = 3,500 ÷ 4,840 = 0.723 ac

We round the result to 2 decimal places and get 0.72 acres.
