What is a cup?

A cup is a unit of volume. There are slightly different sizes to cups, with a US cup different to a UK cup. For these purposes we’ll talk about the US cup, which is a unit of volume that equates to 16 tablespoons or 8 fluid ounces. The cup in this instance should not be confused with a metric cup or a teacup, as these are different volumes. One cup is just under 236.6 milliliters (mL), but this is labelled as 240mL on packaging for nutrition purposes.

What are milliliters (mL)?

The millilter is an SI unit of volume within the metric system. It is often referred to with the abbreviation mL or ml, and with the spelling millilitre. A milliliter is a unit of volume that is equal to 1 cubic centimeter, 1/1,000 of a liter, or around 0.061 cubic inches.

How many mL in a cup?

In the US the standard cup is measured as 236.6mL (although on labelling this will appear as 240mL). In Canada, the UK, and other Commonwealth countries the metric cup is used with a measurement of 250mL as standard. In some cases, you might be looking at a recipe book that pre-dates the change in focus in British recipes, when the cup was no longer used as a standard measurement. In these instances, it could be that the cup is an imperial cup size of 284mL.
